Drones are the mobile automation branch reported in current Flatten The Mountain gameplay. They mine while you work in another area, so their value comes from productive uptime: time spent breaking useful blocks rather than traveling, searching, or sitting idle. A stronger fleet can accelerate layers, but the best next node depends on whether damage, rate, speed, range, unit count, or target access is limiting it.
The official Roblox description confirms the broader Skill Tree but does not name Drones. The current branch, tiers, and performance labels are supported by community screenshots checked September 1, 2026. Treat exact costs, caps, and effects as current-session fields.
Find the Drone branch
Open the Skill Tree and choose the visible Drone category. Current community material reports unit tiers labeled Drone I through Drone IV and performance choices such as Damage, Rate, Speed, and Range. The menu in your server is authoritative; do not infer missing tiers or buy toward a label that is no longer shown.
Before purchasing a performance node, confirm the related drone exists and is active. Record the exact name, current level, cost, prerequisite, and effect preview. A node may apply to one tier, all drones, or a particular stat family, and the screenshot alone does not establish its scope.
After unlocking a unit, return to the mountain and follow it for part of a layer. Watch which targets it chooses, how it moves, how long each break takes, whether it gets stuck, and when it becomes idle.
Diagnose Drone performance
Do not judge a Drone by one dramatic block. Follow it through several targets and one terrain change. A damage purchase can look powerful on stone yet fail to improve total layer time when travel dominates.
Damage versus Rate
Damage matters when a drone needs too many effective attacks to remove the current blocks. Rate matters when each attack is useful but the gap between attacks is the delay. The menu’s exact definitions can differ, so compare the animation and block result before assigning those meanings permanently.
Test one node over the same duration and similar block family. Count blocks cleared or measure productive attack time. If the layer changes between samples, repeat because different durability can disguise the result. Keep power-ups and teammates out of the comparison when possible.
Damage can reach a point where one more upgrade does not reduce the number of actions needed on ordinary blocks. At that breakpoint, Rate, Speed, Range, or another unit may provide more visible progress. Use current block behavior rather than assuming damage always scales linearly.
Speed and Range
Movement Speed is valuable when drones spend much of the run traveling. Range can be valuable when targets are nearby but outside the current reach or when terrain repeatedly forces repositioning. These roles can overlap in practice, so observe what the current node actually changes.
Create a simple uptime sample: for thirty seconds, mark each interval as mining, moving, or idle. If movement dominates, test the available travel solution. If idle time dominates while blocks are visible, inspect range, target access, and whether the drone has a valid active unit. If mining dominates, damage or rate may be the next limit.
Do not clear the exact block a drone is approaching unless you intend to redirect it. Manual players can reduce drone efficiency by repeatedly stealing its target, causing new travel. Work in a different zone and let each system own useful coverage.
When to unlock another Drone
Another unit can expand simultaneous coverage, but only if there are enough reachable blocks for each drone to remain productive. Watch for overlap: two units traveling to the same small cluster may not double progress. A wide or newly exposed layer can benefit more from another unit than a nearly finished strip.
Compare the unlock cost with improving the existing fleet. If one drone already mines continuously but cannot cover the mountain, capacity may be the limit. If several drones all struggle on each block, performance may be the limit. Use the current price and next layer goal to decide whether the purchase can pay back before completion.
Coordinate Drones with manual mining and Turrets
Let Turrets handle stable reachable zones and send your character toward isolated ore, edges, or areas where drones travel poorly. The exact AI cannot be commanded through assumptions; observe target choices and position yourself where you add new progress.
If a turret and drone focus the same region efficiently, move elsewhere rather than competing. If the drone becomes stranded after a layer change, open paths manually and observe whether it retargets. Rejoin only after checking that the unit is genuinely inactive rather than traveling to a hidden target.
Drone troubleshooting
If an owned drone does not appear, verify the unit unlock and any deployment or activation control in the current menu. Close the interface, wait for the run to load, and rejoin once if necessary. Do not repurchase until the ownership display is clear.
If performance seems worse after an upgrade, compare the layer, block type, target route, and interruptions. A new layer can be tougher, and an eagle event can reduce uptime. An apparent regression is not enough to claim the node is broken.
Drone FAQ
What do Drones do?
Current community gameplay shows them as automated mobile miners. Exact target rules, income credit, stat formulas, and every tier need confirmation in the current live version.
Which Drone upgrade is best?
Choose the node that improves the largest lost-time category: damage or rate for slow breaks, speed for travel, range for target access, and another unit for insufficient simultaneous coverage.
How many Drones are there?
One September 1 guide reports Drone I through Drone IV. Treat that as community reported, not a permanent complete cap. Read the current Skill Tree for the actual available tiers.
Do Drones earn cash?
Community material describes them as mining automation, but cash credit and party behavior should be confirmed by comparing balances and progress in the current game.
